‘Lovegame‘ is the fourth single by Lady GaGa from her debut album ‘The Fame‘.It was released as third single in America(except Canada) and Europe and as fourth single in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, France and Switzerland.
Critical Reception
The Boston Phoenix said that: “With production help from DJ Space Cowboy [...] Gaga ups the ante in terms of catchy song writing and sheer high-in-the-club-banging-to-the-beat abandon.” Billboard reviewed the song positively: “It has all the winning ingredients of its predecessors: a radio-friendly, club/electropop feel; a provocative, yet silly enough catchphrase and hook (“Let’s have some fun, this beat is sick/I wanna take a ride on your disco stick”); and a dash of ’80s synth magic, so the adults can play along. On “LoveGame” GaGa is in it to win it.”
Chart Performance
Lovegame peak on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 is at #5 making it Gaga’s third Top 10 US hit. It peaked at #1 on The Billboard Top 40 Mainstream making Gaga the third act in history to have 3 #1 songs in the radio from a debut album. To date, Lovegame has sold 1,000,000 digital downloads.
In The UK, the song’s first appearance at the singles charts was even before it was announced as a single, at #89 early 2009. It’s peak on UK charts is #19.
In Europe, Lovegame peaked at #13 on the Billboard European Hot 100.
Music Video
The music video for ‘LoveGame‘ was directed by Joseph Khan and although it was shot in Los Angeles it takes place in New York’s subway.
Live Performances
Gaga promoted the single in several tv shows and few award ceremonies, including: Dancing With The Stars, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Rove (Australian Tv show).
At The 2009 MuchMusic Video Awards the song was mashed-up with “Poker Face.” This performance, which included Gaga being trapped in a fake subway car surrounded by fake police officers, was billed as a tribute to New York City. The performance had Gaga wearing a Madonna inspired bustier with pyrotechnics which went off at the end.
