Poker faced: Lady GaGa
|
The Poker Face singer told V magazine: “My sister texted me and she was like, ‘Madonna is 15 feet away from me. And there are two guys having sex in the audience. This is awesome!’
“I just remember thinking, ‘Wow, this is exactly what I wanted. I’ve got Madonna and I’ve got gay sex!’,” she laughed.
She added: “I didn’t want my gay fans to think I was using their community for edginess… the gay community is the single reason that I am here today.”

LADY GAGA has dismissed rumours of a feud with tour mates the PUSSYCAT DOLLS, insisting the girl group didn’t feel upstaged by the stellar reviews the opening act received.
The Just Dance singer got her start in the music industry writing songs for the burlesque-inspired band before carving out her own solo career.
And now she has come full circle – she opened for
the Pussycat Dolls on a worldwide tour earlier this year (09).
But some critics have suggested she was the main draw – as she consistently outshone the headliners.
GaGa suggests the reports are aimed at driving a wedge between all the girls, and she insists she’ll always remain great friends with her Dolls.
She says, “It’s something that never really came to my attention until interviews… We had such a wonderful time on the road and I’m just grateful to travel and reach lots of my fans at once. Because of them (Pussycat Dolls), I can now come back and play the area by myself, so I’m very grateful.”

Lady GaGa was interviewed by NewsWeek, and she talked about her album, The Fame, the YouTuBe, her career, and what we’ve been waiting to hear about, her VMA 2009 Performance:
Congratulations on your nine nominations. Have you always been a fan of the VMAs?
When I was younger, I used to wrap a big blanket around myself, an afghan my grandmother knitted, and I would wear it like a gown. I would run around the basement with popcorn and I would scream in excitement waiting for them to come on. I used to love the big pop acts. I remember Alicia Keys gave a beautiful performance and Michael Jackson with ‘N Sync.
Have you figured out what you’re going to perform?
I’m going to be performing one of the most recent singles off my album. But it’s going to be a different and more dramatic interpretation. And it is most certainly rooted in New York-style performance art.
What does that mean?
It’s less of me singing the song, and more of an art installation. A performance-art piece. It’s very well-designed and thought out, and we’ve been planning it for months and months. It is for me a very meaningful performance, [for] where I am in my career, as well as the experiences I’ve had, as well as the co-headlining tour I’m going on in the fall.
Do you think it will be one of those defining moments people will remember at the VMAs?
I know it will. I sort of have this philosophy about things: there’s never a reason to do something unless it’s going to be memorable, unless it’s going to change things, unless it’s going to inspire a movement. With the song and with the performance, I hope to say something very grave about fame and the price of it.
Something grave? What?
You’ll have to see.
What are you going to wear?
I would say that the fashion for the performance is a representation of the most stoic and memorable martyrs of fame in history. It’s intended to be an iconic image that represents people. I think after watching the performance and maybe studying it after you watch it on YouTube, you’ll see the references and the symbols come through.

Thanks to her outsize ambition, Lady Gaga has been compared to any number of famous blondes, including Britney Spears and Madonna. But it turns out that Gaga most identified with another golden-tressed lady when she shot her video for “Paparazzi.”
Princess Diana was the reference point for her VMA-nominated “Paparazzi” clip, Gaga said in her V magazine cover story. Her accompanying photo spread was shot by Mario Testino, who regularly photographed the princess while she was alive.
“Yes, Diana was the most iconic martyr of fame,” she says in the September issue. “She died because of it.”
As for all those other blondes that people are quick to compare her to, well, Gaga said, that’s just lazy. “Look, when I was a brunette, they called me Amy Winehouse. Then they called me Christina, then Gwen. I just don’t think most people’s reference points go back very far.”
Although Gaga may get slightly peeved when she’s compared to Madonna or Britney, it’s the moments when she’s recognized by people who play a completely different genre of music that tickle her fancy. When she found out that Faith No More covered one of her songs, she was ecstatic.
“I love Faith No More! Their song ‘Epic’ was my burlesque number at the bar I used to work at! I used to fog myself and dance to it,” she recalled. “When I found out they did ‘Poker Face,’ I was like, ‘Sh–!’ ”
Her newfound fame means that sometimes she also finds herself in tabloid magazines being critiqued for her odd sense of fashion. But she isn’t concerned by what gossip editors have to say about her. “Us Weekly putting me on the worst-dressed list, I could care less,” she said. “If Karl Lagerfeld called me an ugly hag, then I’d be upset. Because it’s Karl Lagerfeld.”
She went on to say that people may have also misinterpreted her look and aesthetic. “To us, it’s just beautiful,” she said. “The idea that Gaga is just kooky for the sake of being kooky is so wrong.”
Things are about to change for the Gaga stage show once she hits the road for her tour with Kanye West in October. She told the magazine that the duo are “exploring aesthetics and new technology that neither of us have traveled, and we are attempting an epic story.”

Lady GaGa has never been one to hold her tongue – and in a new interview with V Magazine, the pop star dishes on everything from style to sex.
“Mario [Testino] wanted me naked all day long,” GaGa said of the elaborate cover photo shoot with the famed photographer for the mag’s fall issue. “It was my stylist, Nicola, who kept sneaking in the designer stuff. He was like, ‘Put this Fendi belt on right now!’ We love clothes. But Mario, he really understands me, and he said, ‘I want this to be about you. I don’t want it to be about the clothes.’”
But the fashion-centric singer also talked about her music, including the bevy of cover bands which have done versions of her hit “Poker Face.”
“I looove Faith No More! Their song ‘Epic’ was my burlesque number at the bar I used to work at!” she said. “When I found out they did ‘Poker Face,’ I was like, ‘S***!’”
The busy artist is planning a tour with Kanye West – but instead of opening for the rapper, it’ll be a collaborative effort.
“We are attempting an epic story,” she said.
And while the breakthrough star has found herself compared to the biggest names in pop music – Madonna and Britney, among others – she said she’s not trying to be anyone but herself.
“Look, when I was a brunette, they called me Amy Winehouse,” she explained. “When I was a blonde, they called me Madonna. Then they called me Christina, then Gwen. I just don’t think most people’s reference points go back very far.”
Still, GaGa didn’t mind when the Material Girl herself turned up at New York City’s Terminal 5 venue to catch her on tour.
“My sister texted me and she was like, ‘Madonna is 15 feet away from me. And there are two guys having sex in the audience,’” GaGa recalled. “I just remember thinking, ‘Wow, this is exactly what I wanted. I’ve got Madonna and I’ve got gay sex!’”
She added that the gay community, including blogger pal Perez Hilton, has helped her rocket to superstardom, supporting her long before she had No. 1 singles. And she says she’d never give up playing gay clubs even as she heads from theaters to arenas.
“With the exception of God, my family, and [best friend] Matthew [Williams], and the Haus [of GaGa, her design collective], and Vincent Herbert [who signed and discovered her], the gay community is the single reason that I am here today,” GaGa said. “I started out playing gay clubs in America, then I went to London to play G-A-Y, where I didn’t think anyone knew who I was, and there were thousands of people there. How could I ever turn my back on those people who really fought for me? And besides the loyalty factor, playing in gay clubs is fun.”
