The Billboard Rising Star Award rewards artists that have achieved a level of success and proven to have vast potential in the early stages of their career.
Lady Gaga is the undisputed break-out star of the year for many reasons, including the success of her debut album, “The Fame” (Streamline Records), which has spawned four Billboard Hot 100 hit singles like “Just Dance” and “Poker Face,” both which reached No. 1 on the tally. “Just Dance” and “Poker Face” are also the Nos. 2 and 8 best-selling digital songs of all time, with 4.6 million and 4 million downloads, respectively.
Gaga recently became the third artist in the history of the Mainstream Top 40 Airplay chart to have three No. 1 singles from a debut album. “The Fame” is also the best-selling album from a debut artist for 2009, with 1,441,000 copies sold in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In addition to writing all the tracks on her album, Lady Gaga has previously written for Britney Spears, the Pussycat Dolls, and New Kids on the Block.
“Lady Gaga is one of those rare examples of a truly unique artist with mass appeal,” says Bill Werde, Editorial Director of Billboard. “She has established herself as one of today’s top songwriters, and the whole world is waiting to see what her next outrageous but brilliant move or style will be. It is that ongoing anticipation, combined with her success that makes her a rising star.”
The Billboard Women in Music Event celebrates the most powerful and talented women in the music business, and is held in conjunction with the much-anticipated publication of Billboard’s Women In Music Power Players List – recognizing the top female music executives who are leading the industry with their artistic and business vision.

“Paparazzi” has scored Lady GaGa her 4th song charted in the top 20 of The Billboard Hot 100, by jumping #44-#18 this week on the chart.
On The Billboard Hot Digital Songs, the song is coming in at #12 with 63,673 digital copies sold last week.
The song has gained 7.1 million in radio audience from previous week, charting now at #48 on Billboard Hot 100 Airplay.
On Mediabase, “Paparazzi” appears at #20. almost surspassing “LoveGame” that is still in the chart, at #19. Mediabase charts are used to build Billboard Pop Songs and the Billboard Top 40 Mainstream charts, on the last one, the peak for “Paparazzi” is #24.
The song is most likely to make the Top 10 on The Hot 100 and the Top 5 on Digital Songs due to the rise in downloads after the VMA performance. “Paparazzi” is currently at #3 on iTunes Top Songs, one of the biggest stores for paid downloads, and it’s data is used to build both Digital and Hot 100 Billboard charts.
Despite the recession, there was no shortage of VMAs afterparties in New York City last night. In fact, many of the show’s biggest names converged on a four-block radius surrounding 14th Street and 10th avenue, the same area where Courtney Love played an impromptu set on Saturday night for designer Alex Wang at a Fashion Week party held at the corner gas station.
But on Sunday night, it was all about Lady Gaga turning heads in her umpteenth costume change of the night (we lost count after five).
Arriving at Avenue in a limo with bestie Perez Hilton, the Best New Artist winner incited a mad crush of autograph seekers. Wearing an
all-white ensemble (sans underwear) that she described as “Minnie Mouse’s wedding,” Gaga dedicated the evening’s dramatic performance of “Paparazzi” to her fans. “I wanted to say something honest and real and not just give a performance where I was jacking off on stage the whole time about my record,” she said. “It was really for my fans, who I knew would be at home cheering and swooning.” Inside the club, Gaga was joined by Katy Perry, Russell Brand, Keri Hilson, Kristin Cavalleri and Soulja Boy.
Around the corner at 1 Oak, MTV.com reports that a verbal scuffle went down between Diddy and his posse and security personnel, which was resolved without incident. Just after midnight, a logjam of people had practically blocked off 17th Street, while inside Jay Z, Rihanna and Justin Timberlake held court in the VIP section.
A few blocks away, Warner Music Group hosted its own post-show soiree at Abe & Arthur’s. Green Day along with members of 3OH!3 and All-American Rejects were early arrivals (the Rejects’ Tyson Ritter still covered in glitter) in what quickly turned into a crowded scene.
Meanwhile, downtown, Pete Wentz hosted friends of Fall Out Boy at his own East Village bar, Angels & Kings. Members of Cobra Starship were in attendance, with singer Gabe Saporta dancing away, clearly pleased with his own VMA appearance. Earlier on the VMA red carpet, Saporta told RS he wanted Taylor Swift to be his good girl goes bad for the night. As of 3 a.m., it didn’t look like that fantasy had materialized. Then again, Swift had other things on her mind.
